Come Discover Washtenaw County’s Hidden Histories

Some of you know I have been involved in Justice InDeed, an amazing project to map racial covenants in Washtenaw County — the county that contains Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. After an epic, 5-year research project involving extensive engagement, over 1,000 volunteers, and countless meetings and events, we have uncovered more than 9,000 racially restrictive covenants. These covenants shaped where people could live, excluding Black families and others from neighborhoods across the county. Their legacy is still with us. We are inviting the community to learn about this history, see the map and tools we’ve created, and imagine what comes next for housing justice and repair. Join me at one (or all!) of our community shareback events, on Oct. 21 and 28th. Register now.
