Pranks in Shaw

This house has been in this condition - half torn down - for well over a year. A prankster has recently added a whimsical sign dubbing the lot “Lake Woodson State Park.” The lot is adjacent the Carter G. Woodson house and a triangle park of the same name.

I’m heading to West Palm Beach, Florida later today for a family holiday function. I’ll be back in town next week. I’ll probably moblog a few photos, but that’s about all on the web. Happy Holidays!

Meetup Report

Blogger MeetupLast night even though I was late the monthly blogger meetup went smashingly with about 20 people in attendance. It was good to see Celeste, Michael, and Eddie who lives in San Francisco and dropped by for a visit. Always Write has a better list of attendees, Pat and I forgot to send around a sign-up list. Pharaoh’s barkeep John kept us happy with $2 buds and half price rail drinks. After that I went to the Science Club to hear some music. It’s a new club on 19th Street that kinda has an Ozio-type vibe going on. It’s in an old rowhome so there are 4 smallish floors from the basement to a semi-private top floor.

Thanks to Michael who pushed me over the edge by telling me “it changed his life.”

MCRI Spokesman and frequent commenter sent me this link — the Michigan Court of Appeals has overridden a vote of the Board of State Canvassers and ordered the Secretary of State to put the proposal on the ballot. MCRI opponents are expected to appeal the decision to the Michigan Supreme Court.

The other day I stumbled across gVisit.com, a website that gives you some simple javascript to plug into your website whereby “You will be given your own URL that lets you track the visitors to your website using Google Maps.” Prett neat, I thought, and plopped it in. Today on a whim I clicked on the link to view the map (it’s in the “recent comments” section to the right) and was surprised to discover my readership is just about as balkanized as the content on this website. If I had the energy I could launch two distinct “faces” pulling only the correct entries from wordpress, but in the meantime I offer some topical navigation links above.

Gadgets, Get Yer Gadgets

Today I broke down and purchased a Treo 650. Before I wasn’t exactly in the technological dark ages, but using a slightly obscure smartphone manufactured by Samsung called the i500 (all the way on the left). The phone worked fine and had a solid OS, but like many older phones didn’t support SMS messaging. To paraphrase a friend, it had enough features for anyone but me. In addition to sporting beautiful SMS software, the Treo has a digital camera, supports bluetooth, has greatly enhanced email functionality, and an expansion slot for an SD memory card which allows you to convert it into a MP3 player.

In an effort to help fund my purchase I have put a variety of phones I had lying around up for sale on eBay, my first attempt at selling. I am selling two Samsung i500s, one Sanyo 6400 (middle) with a cracked screen but with tons of batteries and parts, and a barely-used Sprint Connection Card for a laptop that lets you surf the web anywhere on their network.

Care to bid? With no reserves, how can you resist …
