Anyway, whatever term we use to describe the events should not, as many are willing to, excuse the violence as valid political speech. The consequences were undoubtedly negative, hastening neighborhood decline for a generation, placing people's lives in danger, and unjustly destroying property and people's livelihoods. It's certainly dated (written in the fall of '68), but it's really telling to learn about parts of our neighborhood that were burned in the disturbance and that still haven't been rebuilt today. 40 years later, that incident still has a discernible impact on our city.
